Over the years the standard method of purging has been to blow out most of the polyurethane with air or nitrogen followed by pumping through a solvent. The favored solvent for purging has been methylene chloride (MeCI), which functions well technically. Recently, results of laboratory studies have questioned the human safety of using methylene chloride. Consequently, methylene chloride is under review by state and federal asencies. Some agencies already have implemenied regulations, while others are pending. A study showing that methylene chloride caused tumors in rats and cancer in mice was published by the National Toxicology Program in 1985. As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Con-

Evaluation of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate as an indoor air pollutant and biological assessment of methylene dianiline in the polyurethane factories

Today many raw materials used in factories may have a dangerous effect on the physiological system of workers. One of them, which is widely used in the polyurethane factories, is diisocyanates. These compounds are widely used in surface coatings, polyurethane foams, adhesives, resins, elastomers, binders, and sealants. Exposure to diisocyanates causes irritation to the skin, mucous membranes, e...

Waste Minimization Strategy: Flexible Polyurethane Foam Manufacture

Methylene chloride and CFCs are used as auxiliary blowing agents in the manufacture of flexible polyurethanefoams and are promptly emitted during the manufacturing processes. The concentrationof the auxiliary blowing agent are quite low due to the accepted practice of using large volumes of air to lower the ambient concentration of toxic isocyanates (a key chemical in the urethane reaction seque...

Comparison of a novel lycra endotracheal tube cuff to standard polyvinyl chloride cuff and polyurethane cuff for fluid leak prevention.

BACKGROUND A high-volume low-pressure endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff forms folds along its contact with the trachea, allowing mucus leakage into the lungs. We developed a thin-walled ETT cuff made of Lycra polyurethane. METHODS In vitro, we tested 6 of each of the new prototype Lycra cuff, the Mallinkrodt Hi-Lo ETT (polyvinyl chloride cuff), and the Kimberly-Clark Microcuff ETT (polyurethane cu...

Microwave Plasma Reactions of Imidazole on Polyurethane Elastomer Surfaces: A Spectroscopic Study

Recently initiated studies concerning surfacemodifications of poly(dimethylsiloxanes) usingmicrowave plasmonswere extended to polyurethane (PU) surfaces. However, when the same experimental conditions used in the closed and open flowmicrowave plasma reactorswere applied, no chemical bonding of imidazole molecules to PU surfaces was detected. In order to facilitate the imidazole-urethane surface ...

Cancer incidence and mortality of isocyanate exposed workers from the Swedish polyurethane foam industry: updated findings 1959-98.

AIMS To assess whether cancer incidence and mortality in chronic obstructive lung diseases were increased in the Swedish polyurethane foam industry cohort, updated with 11 more years of follow up. METHODS The mortality and cancer incidence (1959-98) experienced by a cohort of 4175 male and female employees employed for at least one year in the period 1959-87 at one of nine Swedish polyurethan...
